What Q-SPARK does
Fort Lewis College is a partner in Elevate Quantum, the U.S. Department of Commerce-designated Quantum Tech Hub for the Mountain West. Through Q-SPARK, FLC Physics and Engineering opens up quantum education with workshops, mobile computer lab outreach, faculty-developed curriculum, and applied research — building early pathways into quantum computing, engineering, and advanced STEM for students across the region.
Introductory and advanced sessions for high school and college students, using visuals, demos, software, and games.
Computer-lab-based outreach that travels to rural and regional schools across Southwest Colorado.
Paid undergraduate research and student instructor roles that build real experience in emerging technologies.

Testimonials
Teachers and students share what a Q-SPARK workshop meant to them.
Q-SPARK did more than introduce Ignacio students to quantum computing. This partnership between FLC and IHS invited rural and ethnically diverse students to see themselves as part of the future of science and technology. Exposure to STEM education opportunities is especially valuable for rural students, who have the talent and curiosity to contribute to emerging fields but may not always have opportunities like this close to home.
It was really impressive, especially the hands-on experience in the lab building silicon wafers and watching a live demonstration. I learned about the next step in computing; quantum mechanics and quantum computing are so much faster. Where Newton’s laws failed at the nano level, is where quantum begins. The professors at FLC are amazing people and some of the best teachers I’ve ever been around. I think it is so cool that in a place as small as Durango and FLC, that we can have this level of access to learning quantum. It was an amazing experience.
I really liked it and learned about how quantum gates work. I was impressed to learn how much more powerful quantum is than regular computers.
For someone with limited math background, this workshop explained concepts that allowed me to grasp what quantum is and how it could be used in the future to improve so many systems.
